“I have been running long distances all my life, mostly half and full marathon events. I have been very fortunate with keeping injuries at bay, however, as I get older, I am noticing a difference in both my running strength and my recovery time. This allows her to give precise verbal direction which enables students to make any adjustments to their postures themselves rather than having hands-on assists. Sometimes these directions can be incredibly subtle, but when applied the posture completely opens up. The result for the student is a more mindful practice and a better understanding of their body’s capabilities in the postures. The sequencing of each class, in particular her Vinyasa (flow) classes, are works of art; different from week to week so you’ll always have something new to try. I began attending Eryn’s yoga classes almost a year ago and since then I have become completely addicted, coming to her Monday morning Hatha classes as well as her Friday night classes. In the last five years that I have been doing yoga I have never found a teacher so dedicated to her practice, so positive and caring towards her students. For Eryn, the practice of yoga is not simply a way to get in shape, although becoming stronger is a by-product of yoga, it is a path to lead you on a healthier and more mindful life. Her classes focus on breathing, stretching, mind control, and perfecting postures. She explains postures to the very last detail and I love hearing her insightful comments. I first met Eryn at the Sportsplex, where I was taking yoga sessions because the time and place were convenient. The instructors would change from time to time, but in general we had a class of about 12 people that dwindled to half that over the session. Eryn showed up as the instructor for one session and with her came a huge contingent of students….. I was taken aback, thinking wow – these people follow this instructor around, I wonder why? Well several years later, I no longer wonder why, as I do it myself. I love the way that Eryn makes all the moves flow into one another, such that even the transitions are part of the practice. The practice is intense, yet elegant. The continual movements help to keep my mind on my practice. Eryn’s excellent knowledge of the human anatomy comes through in her comments regarding small adjustments that make huge differences to the experience of a seemingly routine pose, such as warrior. Her corrections, aimed at the class in general, always find their mark leaving me wondering how she knew I was doing that. The opening and closing routine of every practice and Eryn’s soft lilting voice giving points to ponder always make me feel comfortable and at ease as I come home to my mat in her presence. I was not a stranger to yoga, but Eryn’s classes gave me a new appreciation for the practice of yoga. Eryn knows just how to encourage and challenge her class. I especially love how in tune she is with those practising at various levels. Eryn not only knows just how hard to push us, but she also gives us options, so we can choose the level we are most comfortable with. I also appreciate how Eryn gives suggestions to improve form. It could be the simplest instruction, but seems to make a huge difference in the way I experience a movement or stance. Furthermore, I love Eryn’s positive energy and professionalism. She knows the value regular yoga classes have on one’s physical, mental and emotional health and she offers classes at such a reasonable rate that those on a budget can afford to go and get all the benefits yoga provides. I recommend Eryn’s classes to everyone I know!
At the age of 54 and after many failed attempts to start an exercise regime, I decided to try Yoga. Within two or three classes I was hooked — and all because of Eryn. She not only teaches the physical poses and movement but also provides a great deal of encouragement through her inspirational words. Almost two years ago, as a newcomer to Ottawa, I first met Eryn when I signed up for her Intro to Yoga series. Since then, I have continued to follow her and find yoga with Eryn to be fun, challenging, and greatly rewarding. The calm and peaceful environment is something that I always look forward to and my body always feels great after a good class. When a shoulder injury kept me away from my mat for a few months, I regained the strength (and courage!) to return to yoga. I want you to know that meeting you many years ago for my first yoga class truly changed my life. If you remember I was new to yoga and was in rough shape physically and emotionally. You and yoga gave me strength, clarity and confidence to make changes in my life. In these past years I have continued to practice yoga daily (almost daily!) I tried yoga on and off before, not having the confidence to continue as I strained my neck trying to watch the instructor from the back of the class. Then I started going to Eryn’s classes and that changed. Eryn’s amazing way of communicating the poses in a detailed, flowing manner allows me to concentrate on how my body feels while doing the poses rather than watching someone else do them. When I leave her class, not only do I feel like I benefit greatly from strengthening and toning but my mind is also calm and focused.
Like many others, I initially came to yoga for the exercise. Eryn’s beautiful vinyasa style is challenging, her direction anatomically precise and I love the impact of her vigorous classes on my body. But when I think about what I’ve appreciated most about practicing with Eryn, yoga bum doesn’t even make the list.
In these last five years of yoga practice, Eryn has taught me so many things: that right now, without changing a thing, I am exactly where I need to be; that the smallest hint of a smile and a long breath take the pressure off wherever it may be piling up; that I am both strong and weak but most importantly, compassionate enough to honour myself either way. These lessons have been tremendous gifts that carry me a little lighter through life.
