Yoga is Artistic Expression

Physiological differences, individual histories, and genetic discrepancies will ensure that each person looks slightly (or dramatically) different from another in a given pose. This is the very reason yogasanas (the yoga postures) are an art form: every pose is an expression of your own unique history. It may not be possible to stack the bones perfectly, one on top of the other, and still maintain balance and stability. Thus, sometimes we sacrifice depth in the pose for the sake of stability. Postural alignment is one tool we can use to reveal muscular imbalances and other areas requiring attention. But the real question of yoga is, “What are you aligning yourself with?”
Reflection: The next time you practice, consider this very question: Am I aligning myself with the interests of the ego, or do I seek to align with Spirit?
